The following movie is the winner of the Birth Matters Video contest. Here is what the celebrity judges had to say about it:

* “Such great myth-busting and important information for all women, I loved your use of natural scenes. I’d love to see this video getting lots of airplay in the public arena.” –Dr. Sarah Buckley, MD
* “The directness and statistics worked well together…” –Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein
* “Very well done.” “One of my favorites. Talk about evidenced-based care; this really motivates someone to take action.” “This really puts it out there. Cesareans aren’t pretty.” “This was so emotional for me. The film does an excellent job questioning the idea that c-sections are easy, normal, and no big deal.” –from the BMV Judging Panel

This movie addresses the question “Why should we try to avoid unnecessary cesareans?” It also presents advice for how to increase the chance of having a normal safe vaginal birth based on recommendations from organizations such as the World Health Organization, Lamaze International, and the Childbirth Connection.

  1. Thank you for sharing.I just found out I am prego again and my first child was so har.I had a horrible , sickly pregnancy the 1st time.I was put in the hospital for braxton contractions.I know thats what they were cause I was not dialating. Then I was in ?”labor” 32 hours, then to an emergency c-section.Then after I had my son ,before I left the hospital I told them something was wrong but 2 weeks later I was rushed back in to surgery and had gotten a staph infection from the hospital and almost died..Worst pain ever and was not able to breastfeed my son.Now I am pregnant again. What could happen? What should I do? Will I have to have a c-section again?I was never told of these complications.I am scared.Any advice you can give would be much appretiated..Thank you….

  2. @Dawna:

Thanks for sharing your story. I am sorry for what you went through with your first birth. Obviously we cannot tell you what to do but I strongly advise you to do a ton of research before your next birth. Please read Pushed by Jennifer Block, watch The Business of Being Born and spend as much time as you can on the ICAN website and forums.

VBACs are a whole new ballgame and you may get lip service from your care provider but the odds are stacked against you. You are most likely to avoid a repeat cesarean and repeat staph infections (and all other hospital related interventions and complications) by choosing a homebirth if you are able.
