Hypnotherapy for Childbirth

“HypnoBirthing® provides the missing link that allows women to use their natural instincts to bring about a safer, easier, more comfortable birthing. Emphasis is placed on pregnancy and childbirth, as well as on pre-birth parenting and the consciousness of the pre-born baby. ” Hypnobirthing.com

Author: Jamie McMillan

Ever thought about having a natural childbirth and then scared yourself with thoughts of how painful it will be? Well, here’s a new concept – Birth Hypnotherapy. The concept of hypnotherapy during labor is to naturally anaesthetize your body into thinking it feels no pain during labor. Utilizing hypno-birthing, more and more mothers are able to have natural childbirths at home, or in the bath tub making it a truly relaxing and wonderful experience.

You may be thinking “will I be asleep during labor?” The answer is no. Normally you would associate hypnosis with being in a sedative state, not knowing what’s happening around you, but with the hypno-birthing techniques, you are in complete control of your surroundings, and are experiencing little or no pain.

“According to Dr. Dick-Read, use of hypnosis during labor helps laboring women break what he termed the “Fear-Tension-Pain syndrome” which makes labor more difficult. He believed the syndrome actually caused blood to flow away from nonessential organs such as the uterus to large muscle groups in the legs. He theorized that relaxation achieved through hypnosis would prevent that from happening.” Health.discovery.com

Each pregnancy and deliver is different. There’s no way to anticipate exactly what will happen. There is, however a way to prepare your body to be calm and relaxed. While under self-hypnosis, you allow your body to naturally bring your baby down the birth canal. Being in a relaxed state during pregnancy will help reduce fatigue so you can be fully involved in the delivery process.

You should start preparing yourself for birth hypnosis somewhere around the 5th to 7th month of pregnancy. Listening to tapes and reading hypnosis scripts will help in preparation. Your body will become aware of “cues” that will allow a quick transition into the hypnotic state when you need it during labor.

Check into some home-study hypno-birth courses as well as classes you can attend with your birthing partner.

“Hypnosis for childbirth teaches a woman how to enter into self-hypnosis instantly, and create her own natural anesthesia whenever and wherever she needs it. This is important as any drugs taken by a laboring woman can be dangerous for her, and especially her baby. She has total control over her body, and is an active participant in her birth process. ” Childbirthsolutions.com

  1. A great read and informative too. Condfident Child Birth is Hypnosis Programme designed for reducing anxiety, pain and stress during labour and birth.

I would also suggest seeing a reputable Hypnotherapist for a professional and ethical treatment. A good website is http://www.winchester-hypnotherapy-southampton.co.uk they are the largest hypnotherapy centre in the south of england, based in Winchester and Southampton and other large towns and cities across the South of England

  2. Hypnosis is great to control your emotional states. I learnt how to control my state and go in and out of hypnosis which is just great. I recently used it to be pain free at the dentist.
I look forward to using the skills more like above hopefully :)

I discovered how to do hypnosis this with Stephen Lambe where i also became a NLP practitioner. http://www.habits4success.co.uk is the link if anyones interested, they wasnt many of us which was disapointing at first then i realised how lucky i was.

  3. Thank you for you informative post, I have only recently learned of how Hypnosis can help with a myriad of issues. Only wish I could have used this method of childbirth rather than the traditional methods that left both Mum and Bub traumatised by the birth.

  5. I think that the name hypnobirthing will go from strength to strength as a practicing hypnotherapist i often get asked about it.

I think hypnobirthing is great and i always recomend it as an option.
Hypnosis should be encouraged for well being. I have a mother who does it with her children, how brilliant it that !

  7. Thanks for this post. Hypnosis has been used in obstetrics for many years. In 1922, Shultze-Rhonhof reported an 89.5% success rate in a series of 79 cases. He came to the conclusion that hypnosis was a useful and harmless anesthetic agent.

  8. Hypnosis is beneficial on many levels during childbirth. As an anaesthetic and also when used to control emotional state it is excellent in reducing the stress of perceived impending pain thus promoting a much calmer and controlled birth for both mum and baby.

  11. Hypnosis is great for pain relief, I never use pain relief at the dentist as I use self hypnosis. So the benefit for birthing is amazing. Also hypnosis can be used in increasing the impact of the drugs, you can give the suggestion that if you recive any medication your body responds quickly and you keep a calm mind during the controlled birth, while paying attention to the instructions of the mid wife.

  12. It would be great if hypnotherapy could really make a difference during birth. The option of controlling your own pain whilst still having a natural birth would (I imagine) appeal to many people.

  13. I’m a believer in hypnotherapy, I see heavy smokers quit easier after several hypnotherapy sessions….I see people change their bad habits….In computing, it’s like changing our low level brain programming using assembler

  14. I too had hypnotherapy during childbirth, and preparation months earlier was essential. I don’t think I would have experienced the benefits if I had just been going through it for the first time.

  15. I’ve read a number of articles – firsthand and practitioner based – which describe and explain the benefits of hypnotherapy for childbirth. Might not be exactly the same phenomenon as lap-band surgery, but it is a human experience espousing joy, discomfort and life transformation.

  17. Good stuff, I have very heard interesting stories about hypnosis and the awseome things that the mind can do. Have never used it myself, but now considering it after reading this article. Not for hypnobirth, but for relaxation and maybe at the dentist.

  18. At least 70% of the experience of pain during childbirth is created by fear (emotion). The fear creates tension, which causes your muscles to tighten, resulting in physical pain. You can see how this will effect the birth process for not only you, but your baby as well. Hypnosis creates a totally peaceful state of relaxation, allowing your muscles to let go and completely relax. When this happens, the adrenaline is released, and, in effect, the pain. When the muscles are loose and relaxed, the baby is able to make its way through the birth canal so much more easily.

  19. How can I now that this works? What if I say “no thank you” to the doctors when having my baby and then it turns out this stuff doesn`t work? :P

  20. Does hypnotherapy really work? My boyfriend has pseudo seizures through drinking alcohol. As he’s 19, drilling the fact of drinking is bad is in one ear and out of the other. Would hypnosis allow to associate alcohol as a bad thing?

  22. I wish I had read this before I gave birth to my baby girl although I am not sure I would have been able to concentrate enough to go into hypnosis because of how stressful the experience is!

Does hypnotherapy work for everybody? I went to a hypnotist for a problem when I was younger and it never seemed like I was ‘under’.

  23. What people really need to keep in mind with this, is that not everyone can be hypnotized. It has a lot to do with being in a state of mind, and, if you are going into labor, that state of mind might not be there.

  24. Hypnosis is great because at the very least, it helps you relax. But I wouldn’t rely on it for major surgeries.

  25. Child birth is the most crucial stage in the life of a women. The pain during labour and delivery is the main thins they worry about. Alleviating your anxiety about pain is one of the best ways to ensure that you’ll be able to deal with it when the time comes. Hypnosis can be one of the major ways to prevent the anxiety.

  26. @Erica@Forbrukslån:

If you are using hypnotherapy in a hospital setting for childbirth and have compassionate birth attendants, they will probably let you change your mind regarding pain medication. :)

  28. I have seen first hand the benefits of hypnotherapy. My mother was a 2 pack a day smoker for years and after hypnotherapy, she never got another desire to smoke again. TO say the least I was floored and I think it has quite a few beneficial applications.

  29. And don’t forget girls, plenty of fish oil supplements, important for so many reasons for both you and baby, including brain development and a reduction in the risk of post partum depression for new mums.

    Enjoy your new baby.

  34. Self hypnotherapy can help the body to get through times of high stress and pain with little to no discomfort, and for many mothers this has been a great way to have natural child birth. Figured I’d toss in another tip: opening capsules of vitamin e and rubbing it on areas that are getting stretch marks will reduce the stretching of the skin, allow faster healing and creation of new tissue, and may make them go away / not appear entirely!

  47. I used Natal Hypnotherapy CD’s during my 2nd pregnancy to help me mentally prepare and give me a mantra to use to stay calm during labour. It worked like a dream! My labour was quick and totally copeable with – in fact I used no pain relief whatsoever except a birth pool which I got into when I really needed the warmth of the water and then 10 mins later baby arrived! Definately recommend the techniques to anyone.
