Video: Childbirth Video in a Hospital

This is another great example of why unassisted childbirth is best for mother and child.

This is a short, silent clip of another hospital birth video. Hospital childbirths are always disturbing and here is another great example. First of all, notice the birthing position. The poor mother is nothing more than a vagina to the staff. The modern medical model of childbirth is the ultimate objectification of women. Make no mistake about it. You see the poor mother’s head peek over her stomach once to see what is going on. Also notice the blood. You rarely see that in a homebirth.

The second thing you should notice about this childbirth video is the way the birth attendant holds the poor baby upside down by its feet while she deprives it of much needed blood and oxygen by clamping the cord prematurely. Are these people monsters? Are they just brainless? I just don’t get it!! Does anyone think about the poor baby? Who holds a baby by its feet? WHO?? What a welcome to the world.

  1. (I deleted my comment above because of a typo, nothing else… fixed the typo; here is the same comment.)

This is NOT what hospital birth looks like anymore. I, as a homebirth midwife, *rarely* defend hospital birth, but I will in this instance. I have been attending births for almost 25 years and have NEVER seen a baby hung upside down by his/her feet - EVER. The pulling out, yes… the manipulations to get the baby out - sure. But hanging a baby upside down. NEVER. A woman flat on her back? Only with a true shoulder dystocia. I have NEVER seen a woman without a shoulder dystocia flat on her back, always semi-reclined (which isn’t much better, I agree, but we *are* trying to be honest, right?).

    Let’s tell the truth, okay?

  2. Thanks for your comment navelgazing! Im tickled that you stopped by! I love your blog (its in my blogroll).

Maybe babies are not be hung upside down anymore (although something makes me think that the video does not take place in a US hospital so maybe it does happen elsewhere).

It still underscores the fact that newborn babies are treated roughly, harshly and without respect by birthing staff in hospitals.

No mother or father would clean, inspect and weigh their newborn in such a harsh and callous manner. I believe babies are objectified as much as the females are and they are simply a “product” rather than a human being.

To add insult to injury, the same people pad their wallets further with unnecessary injections, eye drops and genital mutilation.

I guess I could make a distinction between “flat on her back” and “semi reclined” but I know from experience that having your head elevated six inches does not facilitate the birth process.
